The bird is the national symbol of Zimbabwe and the fish stands for Holland’s close and personal relationship to the sea. The bird and the fish live in completely different enviroments, but they are still on the same planet. BIRD&FISH wants to bring two worlds together through theatre.
Short History:
In 2006, Jansje Meijman (a FISH) travelled to Zimbabwe for the first time through an Explore Programme. In 2007 she returned with Joyce Timmerman (another FISH) and created a play on gender, which was performed by Mutarese artists (all BIRDS) in Mutare and Bulaweyo. Their partners were Haarlem-Mutare Citylink and Hivos Harare.
The FISH teamed up with Keaven Simomondo, Allen Mapingure and Henry Tsopotsa (BIRDS) in ICHYPPA. This foundation allows kids in Mutare to recieve workshops in arts, and aims to stimulate a creative enviroment for young artists. In 2009 another CityLink play was created, this time on tolerance. During all of this, more great BIRD&FISH plans for the future were formed…
